The I.D. Buzz was presented as Volkswagen’s second concept in a new line of upcoming electric cars during the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, and just a few months later the company has decided to put it into production.
The upcoming production model based on the Buzz and considered by many the modern reincarnation of the famous Bully – or Microbus – will reach the dealer lots in 2022, being offered not only in North America, but also Europe and China. Naturally the van will be introduced after the four-door I.D. will morph into series production – and it’s actually coming in two specific versions, one for carrying cargo. It will also come with Level 3 autonomous driving technology.
The passenger version will arrive at the request of fans. “The Microbus, which is what the Bulli is called in America, has always been part of the California lifestyle,” comments VW’s chief Herbert Diess. Now we’re bringing it back by developing Volkswagen’s next e-generation and by reinventing the Bulli as an electric vehicle.” The same as in the concept, the series model will have ample space for passengers because the batteries will be located in the floor. Variability and ample connectivity has also been confirmed, but there are still no details on the powertrain.
