Mercedes – probably the biggest luxury brand in the world in 2016 – has the biggest lineup it has ever seen, but apparently the model strategy will continue to see new additions in the near future.
One of the entries in the model onslaught will be a new luxobarge in the SUV category – that stratosphere currently represented by models such as the Bentley Bentayga and the Range Rover SVAutobiography. This new screaming luxury model will make use of the still new Mercedes-Maybach badge and will be sold alongside the S Class sedan and the limited edition S650 Cabriolet. The news came as official is it can directly from the Mercedes-Benz CEO, Dieter Zetsche, while speaking with the media on the sidelines of the 2017 Detroit Auto Show.
Aside from spilling the beans: “I’d like to say you will be seeing it, but I’ll leave it at that,” he did not go into any details, so we can only speculate from this point forward. Anyways, most rumors are pointing to the transformation of the GLS crossover – though apparently this will only happen once the posh SUV gets treated to the next generation. Then there’s also the possibility that Mercedes’ new EQ brand for electric vehicles might include a Maybach-branded SUV as the company could fight with Tesla’s Model X in this particular niche.
