After Ford just announced its plans to introduce a new global SUV during the recent 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, Ford Sollers, the joint-venture between the U.S. automaker and Russian carmaker Sollers has disclosed it is adding a new SUV model to its production range.
The joint-venture has revealed officially the new addition is meant to cater for growing local demand for theSUV models, but we also really have to see the connection between the two announcements, as the model set for Los Angeles could very well be the European version of the American-bound Edge.
Still, the Russian market is a rather particular one, so it is possible that the Edge that will start production at the Ford Sollers plant in Elabuga in Tatarstan early next year to be a local version, specifically built for the tough and demanding Russian market, of the U.S. model and one that will not go on sale in Europe.
The Russian venture, formed in late 2011, already manufactures the Kuga, Explorer, S-MAX, Galaxy, Transit, Tourneo Custom, Focus and Mondeo models in Russia. Ford said in May it would also start the production of the EcoSport SUVs in Russia in 2014 at a second manufacturing facility located in Tatarstan in Naberezhnye Chelny.
