The Japanese automaker has not let slip the opportunity to hit the Las Vegas strip with a couple of concepts just in time for the annual SEMA show, where it has introduced the MX-5 Spyder and MX-5 Speedster prototypes.
The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas has become a major event throughout the automotive calendar, jumping from being a low key show for a niche to a full blown venue to display some marketing and performance prowess. The two concepts from Mazda keep up with the “tuning” theme in a different way – they seek to showcase MX-5 Miata’s lightweight construction using derivatives that are known to emphasize such technical capabilities – the Spyder and Speedster have taken cues from vintage roadsters and treated them to a high-tech futuristic approach.
The Sypder goes down to as little as 1, 043 kg (2,299 lbs) and has been painted in a Mercury Silver body hue complete with a “bikini” top and a carbon fiber aerodynamic kit. Other highlights include the 17-inch ADVAN Racing RS II wheels and the Brembo four-piston front calipers with vented rotors, while tinkerers also get to fiddle with the adjustable coilovers. Inside the cabin we find the Spinneybeck PRIMA natural full-grain leather upholstery.
The Speedster in turn is the ultimate featherweight at 943 kg (2,078 lbs) – the windscreen has been axed and replaced with a deflector for ”old school wind-in-the-hair sports car experience.” We can also see the carbon fiber doors and seats along with a 16-inch set of RAYS 57 Extreme Gram Lights wheels. It’s also 30 mm closer to the ground thanks to the K&W adjustable coilover suspension and also uses Brembo brakes.
