While all eyes are on the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and the western automotive world is preparing for the arrival of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Japanese automakers are preparing for the Tokyo Auto Salon as well.
And Subaru is going to premiere there a rather important concept – especially given the fact the event is mostly dedicated to the aftermarket sector – the Subaru Viziv Performance STI concept, a worthy successor to the Subaru Viziv Performance concept that was first seen late last year during the Tokyo Motor Show that took place in October. The official premiere is scheduled for Friday, so we’re not going to have to wait long to see it in all of its racing-ready glory.
More importantly, while entitled only as a prototype, the new Viziv Performance STI concept is almost for sure the appetizer for the upcoming new generation WRX STI, a model that remains one of the legends in the segment. Subaru’s Design Chief Mamoru Ishii has already hinted the Viziv Performance concept was a sneak preview for the WRX fast sedan, so we can only imagine the addition of the STI means the Tokyo Auto Salon concept is the first showcase of the upcoming WRX STI. There are no details about the technical prowess, but we already know for sure that all coming Subaru models will be based on the new Subaru Global Platform, which also doesn’t exclude the opportunity to use a hybrid powertrain.
