Suzuki sees a sales increase for its SX4 crossover after it moved the vehicle into a larger segment.
The new SX4 is a tough rival for models in the compact segment such as the Nissan Qashqai and according to Suzuki’s Europe chief, Takanori Suzuki, the vehicle is expected to outsell the current model by “a lot more” units, for both looks and interior space.
“We have never had before a car like this, especially with its rear luggage space of 430 liters, which is among the best in its class,” said Suzuki.
The new SX4 has a trunk space of 270 liters, and is 160mm longer than the current model. The price has not been released yet, but the car is expected to go on sale in September. The SX4 will be the company’s first model featuring a 1.6-liter diesel engine offered by Fiat. The fact that Suzuki agreed to buy Fiat’s engine, made VW end the partnership with the Japanese automaker.
The new SX4 will stand as the base for the next subcompact crossover, which will be launched in 2015 and will compete with Renault’s Captur and Nissan’s Juke. The automaker will continue manufacturing the SX4 at its plant in Hungary, where Fiat builds the Sedici, which will be replaced by the 500X, to be built in Fiat’s plant.
