Criticisms of the Audi A6 have been numerous since the release of its most recent update, the C6, in 2004. Despite winning the World Car of the Year award in 2005, the A6 was dubbed cumbersome and clunky by some, prompting a facelift by Audi that updated the C6 in 2008. Cosmetic changes gave the updated A6 a sleeker, sportier look and a new 300 PS 3.0 litre V6 TSFI engine with a supercharger restored Audi fans’ faith in the model.
Three years on from that update, and the Audi A6 C7 has got Audi lovers in a state of bliss, delivering a luxury car and sporting sedan in one, focused, all-wheel drive, supercharged beast. The engine is the 3.0 litre V6 that arrived on the 2008 update, with an eight-speed manumatic transmission, and the power hits 310 horsepower at 5,500 rpm, 325 lb-ft of torque at 2,900 rpm.
But it is the design of the new A6 that really gets the juices flowing for Audi fans and motor enthusiasts in general. Bold lines and LED daytime running lights, and LED headlights, make the car stand out on the highway. Inside, beautiful, soft leather and brushed aluminium interiors give a real sense of high class luxury that can make you forget you’re driving a mid-sized sedan, and the performance only adds to that potential to think you’re in another kind of car altogether.
The new A6 corners like a dream and the steering is as light as a feather when set to comfort mode. Drivers who want more of a tangible grip on the engine can switch to dynamic mode and get a firm feel, less body roll and immediate throttle and transmission response. Dynamic mode also allows drivers to tweak the suspension and steering to perfection, as well as the engine and transmission. The A6 presents itself as a near-perfect sedan, and then gives you the opportunity to perfect it even more.
The new A6 is a real beauty and the garages who love to churn out their own versions of new Audis will love getting their teeth into this superbly designed car. But the purists who don’t want to deal with the costs of modified car insurance can just enjoy the new A6 for what it is – a fantastic all round car that specialises in almost everything.
