The French automaker has had for some time a proper competitor for the recently updated Renault Kangoo ZE capable of 168 NEDC miles from its new 33 kWh battery courtesy of the Berlingo electric commercial van.
Now the company is also electrifying the passenger version, which can haul people and lots of gear at once. We are talking about the new introduction in the Citroen electric range – the E-Berlingo Multispace. The model is aimed at customers or businesses looking for room to haul people or cargo while setting out no emissions at all. The only issue is the rather low range of 106 miles (171 kilometers), with the E-Berlingo Multispace expected to reach showrooms during the third quarter of 2017. The new Multispace EV actually comes with the exact same powertrain as the commercial van EV version. There’s just 66 horsepower (49 kilowatts) and 148 pound-feet (200 Newton-meters) of torque and a 22.5-kilowatt-hour battery fitted to the sub-frame at the rear axle, which means the interior space stays the same.
With such a small battery capacity, recharging to 50 percent takes as little as 15 minutes from a CHAdeMO rapid charging port – and the user can get on the smartphone the controls for interior temperature and battery state of charge. The interior packs either five passengers or up to 106 cubic feet (3,000 liters) of cargo without the second row of seats. By the way, if you think the new Multispace EV is still too utilitarian for you, check out the wonderful and quirky E-Mehari, packing a range of 124 miles (200 km).
