Two Russian designers have created the successor of the Volga. The model is created by brothers Bukin, two Russian designers who worked on other GAS models. For now, this is just a prototype design showing the next GAZ model, – but the Russians intentions are to develop a production version of this concept, codenamed GL 5000. For added resonance in the public mind, the designers have used the name of the Volga.
The GAS 5000 GL is equipped with a 3.2-liter engine that develops 296 hp, connected to a six-speed manual transmission. The engine engages all four wheels via a advanced all wheel drive system. Besides promising performance, practical issues have not been forgotten. GAS GL 5000 is a five-door configuration car, so in some way is a hatcback, but also a conventional sedan. This configuration is already met on Skoda Superb and BMW 5 Series GT.
This model may enter sometime in production, but the production will not have too many elements in common with this prototype. Most likely, Russians will abandon the all-wheel drive system and the avantgardist design, in favor of a classical approach. However, is great to see some great prototypes from Russia.
