Thieves Avoid the Toyota Prius Hybrid image

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the Toyota Prius Hybrid is the last model to be stolen in the US.

The trade union’s report says that until the end of June only, only 1 in 606 Prius cars of the 2008 to 2010 model-year has been stolen, compared with 1 in 78 of all vehicles taken for those model years. the basic reason for this is the fact that the parts of the Prius hybrid, which is among the most fuel-efficient vehicles, cannot be used in more- common vehicles.

“It’s a one-model car; the parts on it won’t fit anything else but a Prius,” said John Abounader, executive director of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators. “If you use a Camry, for instance, the engine might fit in another car. On a Prius, the engine is so different because they’re hybrid.”

The Prius hybrid was introduced in the US in 2000 and thieves target older models as there is a bigger market for parts. The most frequently stolen car in 2011 was Honda’s 1994 Accord, followed by the 1998 Honda Civic. California was the state with the biggest number of stolen Prius models, 1,062, followed by Florida with 127 and New York with 111.
