Top Gear Season 21 Episode 3 airs tonight on BBC 2. This is a very special episode as the famous boys are heading to … Ukraine to demonstrate their love for compact, small-engined cars.
But the “wow” factor comes when the producers put then to drive into Chernobyl. For those who don’t know, on 26 April 1986 at about 01:23 AM (UTC+3) reactor four suffered a catastrophic power increase, leading to explosions in its core. The Chernobyl disaster is considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history.
The huge explosion contaminated wide areas of Ukraine, Belarus and Russian Federation – overall there were affected more than 1 million residents. According to some reports, the radiation level was 100 time more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped by the U.S. on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Shortly after the accident a massive steel and concrete structure covering the reactor was built. However this was a temporarily solution (according to some Soviet reports, the present shelter would last only 30 years), and by 2015 a new “Safe Confinement structure” is expected to be completed. The estimated price is 1.54 billion euro.
