Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell technology will cross the mark of the uniquely styled Mirai sedan to the world of commercial vehicles – namely the mass transit transportation solutions.
Here comes the Toyota fuel cell bus that will become available starting next year – certainly not an affordable option though, as pricing estimates put it at about 100 million yen ($961,000) according to Japanese media. The automaker is of course very realistic in terms of sales – this is just a model that shows what can be achieved, not the one that will bring the high sales volumes. The company seeks to have 100 units or more before the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo – with a couple ready to be present on city routes in 2017.
The Toyota Fuel Cell Bus will essentially have a much larger scale version of the Mirai powertrain – ten tanks of hydrogen will store 600 liters, which is good for a range of approximately 124 miles (200 kilometers) and with refueling taking just ten minutes. Two on-board fuel cell stacks will be used as power sources for another two electric motor for a total system output of 306 horsepower (228 kilowatts) and 494 pound-feet (670 Newton-meters). The system, with an energy capacity of 235 kilowatt-hours, can also double as an emergency power source when evacuation sites can use them to keep the lights on.
