Toyota’s latest model is a… Ponam boat with 260 hp Land Cruiser engine image

In case you didn’t know, the world’s largest automaker – Japan’s Toyota – is also producing boats and the latest addition to the Ponam range is the 28V sports cruiser, powered by a Land Cruiser engine.

While the 3.0-liter, four-cylinder turbo diesel motor is usually found in the Land Cruiser Prado SUV and Hilux pickup truck, inside the new Ponam-28V sports cruiser it ditches its chubby SUV credentials and lets the assembly become as speedy as possible. Of course, fitted inside the Ponam-28V needs special marine use tuning, and now packs 256 horsepower (191 kilowatts). Toyota hasn’t advanced any top speed credentials, but the boat is not overly chubby, tipping the scales at 8,025 pounds (3,640 kilograms).

The latter is owed to Toyota’s Hybrid Hull construction, with the V-form hull made from a combination of fiber-reinforced plastic, aluminum, and carbon fibers. The result is seven times stronger than FRP, and 10 percent lighter than a similarly-sized aluminum hull. And inside the Ponam boat you can take most of your friends, because the 30 feet (9.14 meters) long and just over 10 ft (3.1 m) wide boat has room for 12 people. Even the control system is designed to mimic the in-car systems, making the boat easy to pilot in the calm waters and coastal areas it has been designed for – it has also been fitted with a virtual anchor that holds the boat over a fixed point.
