U.S. Auto Sales: Record Sales in May for Hybrid and Plug-In vehicles image

EDTA, the Electric Drive Transportation Association reports that last month, in the United States were sold 56,550 Hybrid and Plug-In vehicles, up from 49,942 vehicles that were sold in April.

48,796 hybrids were sold last month, a number that brings the total hybrid vehicle sales this year to 212,711; a 14 percent increase compared to the same period of 2012.
Hybrid leader Toyota said its hybrid sales increased 16.7 percent last month, with Prius selling 23,522 models – an increase of 9.5 percent compared to the same period of 2012.
However Camry Hybrid sales fell 3.1 percent, but Lexus hybrid sales moved 52 percent higher.

Ford also came up with big numbers – an increase of 506 percent, from 1,375 units in May 2012 to 8,334 units last month. Fusion Hybrid sold 3,335 units in May (up 388 percent), Lincoln MKZ Hybrid 715 unites (up from 480 in May 2012).

Regarding General Motors, the U.S. based automaker sold only 668 Buick LaCrosse eAssist models, down 39 percent from 1,202 units in May 2012; 291 Buick Regal eAssist units, up 67 percent from 174 units in May 2012 and 1,695 Chevrolet Malibu eAssist vehicles, up only 3 percent from 1,642 units in May 2012.

Porsche, the German automaker sold only 55 hybrid vehicles, down from 223 in May 2012 (48 Cayenne S Hybrid models and only 7 Panamera Hybrid vehicles).

EDTA reports that 7,754 vehicles that can be plugged into the grid were sold in May 2013. Nissan, the segment leader, sold 2138 Leaf models, up from 510 in May 2012, while the U.S. made Chevrolet Volt sold only 1,607 units, a decrease of 4 percent compared to 1,680 vehicles sold in May 2012.

Cumulative 2013 year-to-date sales of plug-in vehicles hit 32,305, while overall plug-in sales reached 103,220 in just over two years.

“Surpassing the 100,000 mark for plug-in sales is an important milestone for this industry, but we’re just getting started,” said EDTA President Brian Wynne. “Consumers and critics alike are experiencing and connecting with these cars, fueling significant growth trends.”
