Started as a small company four years ago, Uber has managed to become one of the most successful brands on the market. Since 2011, the company has delivered no less than 30 million rides to people in New York City, meaning around 82,000 Uber rides every day.
Uber has explained that the reason the company expanded so quickly and turned successful was because it started working beyond Manhattan and included other boroughs of New York.
Kimiko Ninomaya, Uber Marketing Manager, said that “By increasing reliability in areas traditionally undeserved by public transportation, more and more people are able to access and explore the outer boroughs”. She added that the company’s New York-based drivers have made more than $750 million driving for Uber.
Not everything was pink though for the company throughout its years on the market. At a dinner in New York the past November, an Uber executive, Emil Michael, suggested that the company could have access to personal information on reporters who were critical of the company. Five of Uber’s 6 New York City bases were suspended for a short while by the New York City Taxi & limousine Commission, suspension later removed as Uber refused to give away its ride data.
That being said, Uber is at the moment one of New York’s largest markets that generates hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue every year.
