UK New Car Sales down 4.4% in 2011

Car registrations fell 4.4 percent in 2011 to 1.94 million vehicles the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said on Friday. It is the lowest number of registrations in more than a decade.

New car sales in December 2011 totaled 119,188 – a 3.7% drop on the December 2010 figure.

“Weak economic growth will make trading conditions tough in 2012,” said SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.

“Business and consumer confidence will be the key to a successful year, so it will be important that government delivers on its growth strategy and helps to resolve instability in the euro zone.”

Registrations in 2011 were supported by fleet sales, with the private market recording a drop in volumes.
Diesel and alternatively fuelled cars took record shares of the market in 2011, with diesel volumes surpassing petrol volumes for the first time.

Britain’s so-called scrappage scheme, which had offered subsidies for buying new cars in exchange for trading in ten-year-old vehicles, was launched in May 2009 under the old Labour government, but it ended in March 2010.
