UK New Car Sales Up 8.2% in September image

UK new car sales in September beat expectations with an increase of 8.2% compared with the same period last year.

The 62-plate was introduced in September and a total of 359, 612 cars were sold in the UK, 26,000 units more than expected. Ford holds the first place with the Fiesta, which sold 18,651 units, narrowly beating its rival, the Vauxhall Corsa. The Ford Focus occupies the third place as the best-sold car in the UK.

“The important September plate change market outperformed expectations with new car registrations,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive. “Although the economic outlook remains challenging, we are starting to see a tentative return of consumer confidence as motorists explore new products and the latest fuel-efficient technologies.”

From January to September 1,620,609 new cars have been registered in the UK, with the Fiesta accounting for 88,747 units from the total. On the 4th and 5th place are the Vauxhall Astra and the the Volkswagen Golf .
