Some of the cars that were parked at an Acura dealership on Chicago’s north side had an unwanted encounter with… hundreds of pounds of salt. They were damaged as the wall of a nearby Morton Salt building collapsed on them.
According to the Chicago Fire Department’s office of news affairs, the salt downpour slammed on cars that were waiting in line for their rightful place inside the service at McGrath Acura of Downtown Chicago – reportedly there were no injuries. From eyewitness accounts reported by ABC’s Chicago affiliate, six vehicles that were almost completely covered with salt incurred the most damage, while another three were partially affected. In a humorous turn of the events, Morton Salt’s slogan – “When It Rains It Pours” – is prominently featured on the roof of the factory.
While officials of the Acura service and dealership, McGrath Acura of Downtown Chicago, were not immediately available for comment, Denise Lauer, a Morton Salt spokesperson acknowledged the accident and said the company, which coincidentally celebrated its 100th birthday this year, was working together with local authorities to asses the damage and find the cause of the salt avalanche. Morton Salt’s Chicago facility is also used for storage and is used for the company’s entire US market.
