Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc., a division of Toyota Motor Corp. (TM: News ), reported that its U.S. vehicle sales for August declined 12.7% to 129,483 units from 148,388 units in the prior year month.
The Japanese automaker has struggled to stock its dealerships with enough vehicles in the months since the disaster, which struck in March.
Toyota’s sales totaled 129,483 cars and trucks last month, down from 148,388 a year earlier. Sales of its popular Prius hybrid fell 20 percent, while Corolla sales dropped 19 percent.
Toyota Division passenger cars recorded sales of 63,250 units, a decrease of 15.8 percent from last August. The Camry and Camry Hybrid led passenger cars with combined monthly sales of 30,185 units. Corolla recorded sales of 16,420 units, and the Prius mid-size gas-electric hybrid reported sales of 9,491 units.
Lexus Division reported passenger car sales of 10,331 units, an increase of 6.2 percent over the year-ago month. The ES 350 entry luxury sedan led passenger cars with sales of 3,887 units, while the IS lineup reported combined sales of 2,865 units. The all-new CT 200h premium hybrid compact posted 2,087 units in its sixth month of sales.
Toyota says its supply situation continues to improve and North American production is expected to return to 100 percent this month.
