U.S. Auto Sales: VW sales up 47.9% in January image

Volkswagen of America, Inc. (VWoA) on Wednesday reported 27,209 units sold in January, a 47.9 percent increase over prior year sales.

The German automaker said the Passat continues to gain steam with 6,318 units for the month of January 2012. However, Jetta sedan remains the volume leader for Volkswagen with sales totaling 9,564, slightly down from last year’s record sales.

The 2012 Beetle, the feature of the upcoming game day ad, sold 1,401 units.

Industry volume is expected to rise about 6 percent in January from a year ago. January is typically the weakest month of the year for new car and light truck sales, but analysts and automakers are looking for signs the industry’s recovery remains on track after a strong finish to 2011.
