Just think of Tag Heuer or Rolex and you’ll instantly know why the watch making industry has been associated many times with its automotive counterpart. Now, a newly created watch company wants to also tap into Detroit’s heritage.
When it comes to the US auto industry, one particular city always jumps in front of us – Detroit. So, no wonder the newly formed watch Company has been named the Detroit Watch Company. Two designers, Patrick Ayoub and his wife Amy, have started it.
“There’s a great correlation between the mechanical timepiece and the car,” said Ayoub. “It’s an engine on your wrist. “And there’s the relationship with (auto) racing,” he added. “It’s a great industrial design product.”
Ayoub has been for years involved with the automotive industry. He designed cars for BMW and Volkswagen in Europe and for DaimlerChrysler and ASC in the US. He currently serves as creative director at SRG Global, a Tier 1 automotive supplier in the country.
At the moment, the micro brand has three designs and two Edition watches – the 1701 Edition, a nod to Detroit’s founding year and the Pride of Detroit Aviator Edition – another “love” affair of the watch industry. He notes that after sales pick up, automotive related designs could follow soon, celebrating Detroit’s timeless connection to the Big Three – GM, Ford and Chrysler.
