President Barack Obama will announce today the government has ordered more than 5,000 hybrid vehicles for its use, according to The Detroit News.
The order comes just days before the National Highway Traffic Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency pass a joint final ruling establishing new, stricter emissions and fuel economy standards for model years 2012-2016.
The new regulations will cost automakers $60 billion over five years and boost overall fleet-wide efficiency to 34.1 mpg by 2016.
