[Video] 2018 Ford Mustang can be a gentleman with the quiet exhaust mode image

According to the Blue Oval automaker, it seems not everybody loves the guttural sound of a muscle car in the morning or evening – specifically the neighbors, perhaps due to chagrin of not having one in the driveway as well.

No matter, Ford also has the solution, provided you opt for the facelifted 2018 Mustang GT – the Good Neighbor Mode – and yes, we didn’t come up with this name on our own. Steve von Foerster is Ford’s former head of vehicle engineering and current head of the company’s user experience team – and from his own experience with a neighbor came the idea to introduce a quiet mode on the pony car. As the story goes he was using a Mustang Shelby GT350 at home and one neighbor even called the cops to report the sound. Oddly enough it seems some people don’t love the Mustang’s soundtrack – and we had issues with the EcoBoost for being too quiet…

There are numerous cars with active exhaust systems – but usually these are used to actually provide more of the soundtrack, not less. Ford says they are the first to feature both a quiet start mode, as well as a timer that can deliver a pre-programed period to use the exhaust in quiet mode at certain hours. It does need Ford’s active valve performance exhaust for the new Mustang GT, meaning you can easily go the other way around and provide a concert for those willing to listen.
