Wagons are starting to become a rare breed – just as MPV’s have fallen out of favor very fast due to the elevation in popularity of crossovers and SUVs – so is the practical segment slowly dying.
But no one can say it’s not going out with a few bangs – one of them being the high-performance 2018 Alpina B5 Bi-Turbo Touring AWD. In case you’ve never heard of it because you were preoccupied with your Moon crawl in outer space, this is the epitome of a sports wagon, the most powerful version of the BMW 5 Series Touring. It’s not coming from BMW per se, but in case you haven’t noticed the relationship between them and Alpina has always been very tight – so much so that an official M5 Touring isn’t even in the cards. Instead you can have all the family, the dog and vacation gear inside this practical wagon and still hit the track with all of them inside.
Motivation comes courtesy of BMW’s biturbo 4.4-liter V8 engine, reworked to deliver 608 horsepower (447 kilowatts) and 590 pound-feet (800 Newton-meters) of torque – sent via the ubiquitous eight-speed automatic transmission to the all-wheel-drive system. The B5 Bi-Turbo Touring hits 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in a mere 3.6 seconds and will go out – until the limiter kicks in – until 202 mph (325 kph).
