[Video] BMW ready to celebrate M5’s 30th anniversary
The German premium sports manufacturer is touting a teaser in regards to the secret – for now – celebration for the 30 years anniversary of the M5 model.
The M Power blog is at the moment in a nostalgic mood, seeking to celebrate with us all five previous incarnations of the Autobahn-beating sedan and then end it all “with a surprise.”
To start the proceedings and kick-off in a smoky manner the celebrations, they outed a video of the current generation M5 doing some donuts. Then, before revealing the surprise, the BMW guys will chronicle all five generations – although most probably we’re in for a special edition of some sorts.
The first M5 was originally revealed in 1985 with a range topping 3.5-liter six-cylinder packing 282 horsepower (286 PS) – which was rather much for the period. Of course, besides being the most expensive BMW, the M5 also claimed to own the title of the fastest four-door sports sedan in series production. Now, the 4.4-liter M Twin Power Turbo V8 outs 560 hp and reaches an electronically limited 155 mph top speed, after first hitting 62 mph in just 4.2 seconds.
According to the new chief of Japan’s aluminum industry body, if other carmakers follow in Ford’s footsteps and release models made from the lightweight metal, its price could rise by as much as a third to $2,500 per tonne.
