Not many days remain before the German brand unveils its first hybrid sports car, designed to top the range in the newly created “i” brand but also in the regular line-up. To finally stir us up, they just released a teaser video with the i8.
After we first saw the official production version of the all-electric i3 in July, BMW is giving us the supercar treatment with the hybrid i8 – with a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in less than 4.5 seconds, in its run to the electronically-limited 155 mph (250 km/h).
Despite all this performance, i8 will also offer top of the line technology and especially, as it weighs ess than 3,285 lbs (1,490 kg), it will have a crazy fuel economy of 94 mpg US (113 mpg UK or 2.5 liters / 100 km) with 59 g/km of CO2 emissions. The company also says it will have an electric range of 22 miles (35 km) and will hit a zero-emission top speed of 75 mph (120 km/h).
In case you forgot, the i8 is powered by a pair of engines – one with internal combustion, in the form of a 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder TwinPower Turbo gasoline engine outputting 231 HP (170 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) sending its power to the rear wheels. The other one is a front axle driving electric motor generating 131 HP (96 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft). Combined, the two achieve 362 HP (266 kW) and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque.
