Bad news for the Italian based automaker Fiat and its 500 model, after the popular vehicle managed to score only three stars at the latest NHTSA testing.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the small hatchback has only scored a three-star rating. The NHTSA experts also said the side impact test was severely cruel to the Italian compact car and the Fiat 500 managed to earn only two stars in this category. This news comes as a big surprise for us because the Fiat 500 has been modified before being launched in the United States, and one of the main reasons was to pass the American crash tests at a good safety rating. We now wonder how many stars will the European version of the 500 get in a similar NHTSA test.

Besides the Fiat 500, the Dodge Caliber and the Ford Escape also managed to score a three-star rating after being tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. On the other side of the “problem”, the new 2012 Toyota Camry and the 2012 Cadillac CTS have joined the ranks of the vehicles that managed to earn a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA. You can watch the video with the Fiat 500 being tested by the NHTSA below and remember, if you own a Fiat 500, drive safe!

  1. The video looked solid, how does it only get 3 stars? I also don't understand how it is a top safety pick by IHS.

There was must some issues with the findings of NHTSA or IHS.
