The second largest US automaker has recently released a new documentary about the Ford GT, which will take the form of a new video series designed to look back and forth into the model’s history and future.
The new video series will take a peek down the history lane to show us the model’s racing pedigree and then will focus on the development of the new generation of street and race models. The first episode has been called “The Decision” and reminds of the tipping point that led to the creation of the GT – the rivalry between Henry Ford II and Ferrari started when the former offered to buy the Italian manufacturer and was swiftly dismissed. Ford resented Enzo Ferrari’s rebuff and decided to try and beat Ferrari at its own game. This led to the development of the original GT that took a 1-2-3 victory at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. The rest is of course history – the road model was built as part of the company’s 100 anniversary celebrations.
Now the first generation of the modern GT is starting to become a cult classic – with models selling for way more money than they were worth when new – and this led to the decision to deliver a second generation that will act as a celebration of 50 years since the full podium win at Le Mans. The current generation GT was first seen as a surprise entry at the North American International Auto Show in 2015 and the racing version will compete in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship – and of course this summer during the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
