The seemingly ordinary yellow bus is a magical place actually, after being reworked by American aerospace company Lockheed Martin in a bid to inspire youngsters to follow a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The regular yellow bus – a well known presence on US streets – has been transformed into the “Mars Experience Bus,” part of Lockheed Martin’s new “Generation Beyond” national education program aimed at kids that may be enticed to study what happens outside of our home planet. The bus literally uses an immersive virtual reality experience that will make youngsters feel like they are driving on the surface of planet Mars. The VR experience has top notch quality thanks to software initially created for today’s “most advanced video games,” and the kids look really enticed by the idea of taking a virtual trip on the red planet in a bid to explore uncharted territory.
The attached footage is not just to show off Lockheed Martin’s creation, with the vehicle set to embark on a tour of the country to allow different kids to experience the ride. The Generation Beyond project also created a smartphone app for iOS and Android devices that actually delivers real-time information about the reported weather on Mars.
