The sport’s chief executive Bernie Ecclestone says he is ready to back a bid to stage a race in London, saying it is the perfect venue for F1.

Yes – a London Grand Prix, a race on the streets of London, which would see cars roaring at up to 200mph around some of the city’s most famous landmarks.

It could be the first time since 1938 that the city has hosted an international competitive motor race with billionaire Mr Ecclestone offering to provide £35m backing for the project.

Experts believe that as many as 120,000 spectators would watch the race, which Mr Ecclestone believes would be even more impressive than the Monaco Grand Prix – currently the most famous and glamorous of motor racing’s street circuits.

He said: ‘Think what it would do for tourism. It would be fantastic — good for London, good for England — a lot better than the Olympics.’

Unlike the London marathon, or hosting the Olympic Games, the logistical challenge and level of disruption is both long-term and costly, not to mention likely to lead to many parts of London being closed to traffic for several weeks.

However, Santander, the bank, revealed its dramatic concept for a Formula One grand prix on the streets of London, with the support of Bernie Ecclestone and world champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button who drive for the McLaren team which they sponsor.
