The Mercedes-AMG GT R not only looks blazing fast, it’s also scorching quick – especially in its own element – the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
The GT R seems to have been born and bred for the famous German circuit, which is why there’s no surprise a recent, independent test has nailed a spectacular time on the Green Hell. The Mercedes-AMG GT R lapped the ‘Ring in 7 minutes and 10,92 seconds, which is amazingly 11 seconds faster than a Ferrari 488 GTB. German magazine Sport Auto got its hands on a GT R, strapped in in-house pilot Christian Gebhardt and watched the lap round unfold. The 7 minutes 10.92 seconds time is even four seconds quicker than the Lexus LFA Nurburgring as well as nine seconds quicker than the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.
Talking about pre-hypercar level, only the Nissan GT-R Nismo is faster – which might even trigger an official round with input from the AMG headquarters in Affalterbach. This is of course thanks to the reworked aerodynamics and the 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 motor cranked up to 577 horsepower (430 kilowatts) and 516 pound-feet (700 Newton meters) of torque, jumping 74 hp and 37 lb-ft above the AMG GT S level. There’s also a “bit” of lightweighting involved – 199 pounds (90 kilograms) have been dropped.
