Grey’s Anatomy star turned racing driver Patrick Dempsey has hooked up with Porsche during the Goodwood Festival of Speed as a way of teasing the upcoming second generation Panamera during the well-known hillclimb.
The tease included a lightly camouflaged prototype of the Panamera turbo that enjoyed the spotlight – though we’re seriously wondering why Porsche is still trying since the cat is pretty much out of the back thanks to last week’s incredible leak. The prototype Patrick Dempsey drove last weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed was still carrying some light camouflage to hide the lighting clusters and some of the more revealing and interesting aspects of the cabin. This was the Turbo version doing the shenanigans – meaning it was carrying the all new Porsche biturbo 4.0-liter V8 engine revealed last month during the Vienna Motor Symposium. It carries its weight using 542 horsepower (550 PS / 404 kW) at 5,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 568 pound-feet (770 Newton-meters) from 1,960 rpm.
The new mill is coming in lieu of the older 4.8-liter and is said to be way more economical also in part thanks to the use of the cylinder-deactivation system. It will be active under light loads – 950 rpm and 3,500 rpm – and Porsche says fuel economy will increase by up to 30 percent. The powertrain of the Panamera Turbo will also include an eight-speed, dual-clutch transmission developed by ZF. The all-new Panamera is expected to debut on June 28 and will break cover after five years of development and will be joined to form a complete lineup by a more practical wagon version and if the rumor mill got it correct – a coupe that will serve as the spiritual successor of the 928 model.
