It just gained independence, but we suspect Polestar had been working in secret for a while to prepare their first ever model, teased again by the company that says it accepts no compromises – while also giving us hints about its name and powertrain.
We suspect Polestar’s first ever solo model will be nicknamed Number 1 – a bold choice – and the video even hints at using a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It’s a logical assumption, given that when Volvo announced it was letting Polestar carve its own independent route, they also said the company is oriented towards green performance. According to rumors the first Polestar vehicle is going to be a sporty coupe, packing plenty of carbon fiber and perhaps coming as a spiritual successor to the retired Volvo C70 coupe.
According to speculation, the differences between the two would be massive – the small-displacement, gasoline-fueled engine and powerful electric motor combination would yield as much as 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts), allowing the new performance machine to sprint to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in less than 4 seconds. Take all this with a grain of salt, because nothing has been confirmed so far – though all unanswered questions will be resolved soon, with the introduction programmed on October 17. After that there’s a rather long wait – first deliveries are expected for 2019, and meanwhile there are still to come Volvos carrying the brand – only it’s going to be renamed as Polestar Engineered.
