We usually tend to keep an open mind here – since we have been fortunate to always find something new on almost a daily basis – and as such seeing a Porsche 918 Spyder in the US doing the rounds on the drag strip wasn’t such a shocker.
We know the German automaker prepared the 918 Spyder hybrid to take on the toughest corners but after all the driver is the one that ultimately decides what to do with the car he paid with his hard earned cash. In the footage below we have some passes of the Porsche hybrid hypercar, which not only takes on a bunch of American experts, but also showcases its attributes in the face of a fraternal battle with a 911 Turbo S. After all, you can flaunt some people when you have 887 hp and 940 lb-ft (1,280 Nm) under your guidance. We’re also quite appreciative of the driver that took his ride to the 1320 feet challenge mostly because the limited-edition 918 cost an arm and a leg and when there’s even the remote possibility to lose a challenge people usually steer clear – it’s that moment when they really hate social media.
For example, while setting the benchmark out there for the rest of the drivers’ pack, the 918 Spyder wasn’t optimized for quarter mile performance and that was clear in the battle with the Turbo S, which took us to the heart stopping close result we were hoping for. Take to the footage below to see which of the passes were his and which went to the other challengers – as the 918 driver also agreed to throw out the window the all-wheel drive because he engaged in roll racing challenges as well.
