Because Porsche is traditionally a sports car manufacturer – even the SUVs are mean machines – going electric is not only a question of improving fuel economy, but also performance.
The two aren’t mutually exclusive, apparently, as Porsche tries to imply in its latest promo video. Porsche has the E-Performance family to showcase, with all of its cars having some sort of electric assistance. There are five vehicles in the footage but just two of them can be had legally on the roads – the Cayenne S E-Hybrid and the all-new Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. The 918 Spyder is now retired from production, the great 919 is a track exclusive competition machine and the gorgeous Mission E is still being cooked up as a production model.
For all of them electrification is not only due to efficiency requirements, but also to boost performance. The Mission E will morph into a production model to compete with the Tesla Model S and the electric range might also grow to encompass a fully electric crossover. Porsche also says it will have a hybrid model in every line – so the 718 Cayman and Boxster, the Macan and even the mighty 911 will go down that route someday – most likely as they graduate to a new generation and architecture.
