This is a beautifully restored Renault 5 Turbo that was produced way back in 1984 – and we came across it while viewing some of the latest Petrolicious videos.
More than three decades ago back in 1980 the French automaker Renault was introducing the R5 Turbo during the Brussles Motor Show and the rest is history – a new breed was being envisioned – the hot hatch. Production started quickly and the company managed to produce 576 R5 Turbos, which had a mid-mounted 1.4-liter turbocharged engine delivering 160 horsepower (118 kilowatts) and 163 pound-feet (221 Newton meters) of torque. We see here depicted a lovely red R5 Turbo in mint condition that is the prized property of Christophe Guerin, a 46-year old French car enthusiast. “I was born in Le Mans, 15 minutes away from the legendary circuit of the 24 Hours of Le Mans,” he comments, explaining the natural love for cars. “My father worked at the Renault factory in Le Mans, and he was a handyman, so he gave me his passion for mechanics and repairs.”
Way back in 1980 he even had the chance to drive a brand new R5 Turbo and “it was such a thrill that I got hooked.” Years after when he was studying in a technical college, he queried a friend to go out looking for a great example as he wanted to have for his own the pocket rocket. “I need one,” Christophe says. “Find a pristine one for me, and make sure it’s red. When I saw it coming, it was… I almost dropped to my knees. That sound—you can’t forget it.”
