The Mercedes-AMG GT range is quite extensive, and the flagship version – the R – would be the popular choice for anyone wanting it all. But it turns out there’s an even more hardcore offering.
You’ll naturally have to pay more for it – and you’ll exclusively have to indulge in driving shenanigans on a closed circuit, since the new GT4 is not street-legal. Sitting next to the AMG GT3 that appeared in time for the 2015 racing season, the new GT4 will reach anyone interested – mostly customer teams – by the end of the year, with first races to be won starting 2018. But before that happens, Mercedes itself has decided to give us a taste of the model on the track – more precisely Circuit of Navarra in Spain.
Mercedes takes the time to explain this is a GT R at its core, but with outstanding modifications to cope with GT4 competitions such as the IMSA Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge, Pirelli World Challenge, Australian GT Trophy or the Blancpain GT Series Asia. It’s naturally a fixture to be had in the VLN endurance racing championship and the famed Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race, as well as Northern and Southern GT4 European Series. The standard range is also expected to grow even further – with Mercedes believed to develop a Black Series coupe, and we’re also eagerly expecting the Porsche Panamera fighter incarnated in a four-door GT.
