We’ve been waiting for quite a while – the previewing i8 Concept Spyder was seen back in 2012 at the Auto China event in Beijing – but finally BMW is just about ready to pull the wraps off its i8 Roadster in time for the arrival at the Los Angeles Auto Show at the end of the month.
The automaker is enticing its fans with a new teaser video that depicts the Leipzig plant in Germany where the i3 hatchback and i8 coupe come to life – though this time around the focus is on the i8 roadster version that will deploy an electrically-operated soft top. As far as we can see, the different roof configuration is also bringing about a new, smaller rear window – while rumors talk about the soft top coming down in a mere 14 seconds at a maximum velocity of up to 37 mph (60 kph).
More so, the i8 Roadster is apparently making good on the rumors that it will premiere the mid-life facelift features for the entire range – the video seems to depict a different set of headlights for the BMW i8 Roadster. We’re holding our breath on the rumored updated plug-in hybrid powertrain now with a new combined output of approximately 400 hp, and more importantly the battery capacity might be double, at 14 kWh.
