The Japanese automaker is apparently translating the military “shock and awe” term for motorsport use, because we can only say the new RC F GT3 is one menacing ride.
Lexus will now compete in GT3 events using an all-new version specifically designed for the track based on the road-going flagship coupe – so here’s the RC F GT3. We’ve been “threatened” with this model since way back in 2013 when during the Geneva Motor Show the company showcased a namesake concept and now the real deal is here to scare off the competition when it hits the grid in the United States in the GTD category of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship series under the 3GT Racing team. The debut is scheduled for later this month during the 24 Hours of Daytona endurance race event scheduled for January 26-29.
Aside from US racing, the 2017 Lexus RC F GT3 will also fight at home in Japan in the GT300 class of the SUPER GT series. Lexus will deliver two vehicles for each competition and Toyota Gazoo Racing is also mulling the idea of sending this ride to compete in other series around the world, so it could also hit Europe or Australia at some point in the future. There’s even a video entitled “The Road to Daytona: Lexus Returns to Racing” showcasing the trials and tribulations of the racer’s creation based on the high-performance road coupe.
