We’re going to have to make room for a completely new Bavarian flagship SUV in our parking lots – the X7 previewed by the Concept X7 iPerformance is coming soon, sometime in 2018.
BMW has opted to deliver the official preview of the concept that signals the arrival of a completely new flagship SUV just before its intended arrival on the Frankfurt Motor Show catwalk – though the cat has been out from the back thanks to an early leak. Signaling BMW’s intention to go head to head with models such as the Land Rover Range Rover, the new X7 will be a full SUV featuring an American-loved three-row cabin, with major hints of opulence and grandeur, as well as modern traits such as the use of huge chunks of glass. The Concept X7 takes the traditional BMW design theme and explodes them – the kidney grilles are now huge, and the newly introduced chrome fender gill has been outlined all along the side sill. The rear meanwhile taps into the latest trends – with LED taillights stretched across the entire tailgate.
The Concept X7’s coolness factor goes up thanks to its glass roof, with a black Y-shaped divider for added design kudos and most likely a measure of stiffness. Moving inside the currently virtual cabin, the X7 makes use of the space available by only delivering seating for six passengers across three rows. The driver gets a digital instrument panel, as well as a wide infotainment screen situated at the exact same height – reminding us of the new setup used by Mercedes on its fancier models – while the second row features its own individual entertainment screen setup. The iPerformance branding lets us know this is a plug-in hybrid powertrain – we’ll know more when the production version arrives in 2018 via the BMW factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
