In March the German automaker premiered at the Geneva Motor Show the facelifted Golf R with the optional Performance Package and now the automaker is showing us a taste of what’s to be expected.
A new promotional video is here to let us catch a glimpse of the wide range of upgrades. The Performance Package first off beefs up the aerodynamics via modified air curtains in the front bumper, new side skirts and a motorsport-inspired rear diffuser. Not to mention the new roof-mounted spoiler that will increase downforce by 20 kilograms (44 pounds). Larger 17-inch brakes are also included – but you’ll mostly hear about the titanium exhaust system developed by Akrapovic with better sound and a lower weight by 7 kg (15 lbs).
The all-digital instrument cluster depicts the speedometer surging up to 267 kph (166 mph) instead of the standard Golf R that is limited at 250 kph (155 mph). Aside from increasing the limiter threshold, engineers also introduce an optimized suspension that brings the car closer to the ground. The powertrain remains unchanged – the refreshed Golf R in European spec comes with an additional 10 horsepower for a grand total of 310 hp (231 kilowatts) and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters) of torque, good for a 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) sprint in 4.6 seconds with the optional dual-clutch transmission – which now has seven speeds instead of the predecessor’s six.
