As the company is on its way to settling the Dieslegate issues in the US, it’s also looking to recapture the audience out there with its all-new midsize SUV, rumored to be called Atlas.
Volkswagen seems to believe the new ‘B-SUV’ will be groundbreaking and represent the perfect crossover for an American family – and we’re eagerly awaiting its reveal set for next month’s Los Angeles Auto Show. Before that happens, we have to endure the trials and tribulations of the traditional teaser campaign. Entitled “Volkswagen Midsize SUV Origins, Chapter 1: Background” this is but the first video in what we hope is a short saga. It doesn’t reveal too much because lots of camouflage is still at the front and rear, we at least get a better idea of the general design trend used for the model. “It’s a car to take the family and transport them to a national park, or state forest, or to their lake house,” said Jim Burch, Product Manger for Volkswagen of America. “So this car fits in perfectly to that active lifestyle.”
Since we’re dealing with a road trip vehicle, it comes with seating for seven, and also generous dimensions of five meters, four centimeters (198.4 inches) in length, a tad bigger than rivaling three-row crossovers such as the Honda Pilot (194.5 inches) or the Toyota Highlander (191.1 inches). Under the hood we get the usual VW deal, either a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine packing 238 horsepower (177 kilowatts), or a 3.6-liter V6 rated at 280 horsepower (208 kilowatts), with assembly taken care at Volkswagen’s plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
