Volkswagen Group annual sales dropped for first year since 2002 image

Volkswagen said auto sales at its multi-brand group declined last year by 2 percent, for the first time since 2002, as a result of the weakening demand from its passenger-car division.

The Volkswagen Group handed over 9.93 million vehicles to customers worldwide in 2015, falling 2 percent from the record 10.14 million in 2014. In December, sales dropped 5.2 percent to 834,800 cars. If Audi, Skoda, Seat and Porsche have all reported positive annual figures for 2015, Volkswagen Passenger Cars division suffered its first fall in sales in more than a decade last year. Sales of VW-branded vehicles fell 4.8 percent to 5.82 million cars as a result of the weakening demand in China and the United States and of the effects of the company’s cheating scheme on diesel emissions tests. “On the one hand, as a global company we must handle the situation on world markets where trends remain mixed,” company’s CEO Matthias Muller said. “In 2016, we will continue to focus on winning back customers’ trust because customer satisfaction is and will remain one of our most valuable assets,” explained Jurgen Stackmann, Member of the Board of Management of the VW Passenger Cars brand responsible for Sales.

The Passenger Cars brand sold a total of 1.50 million vehicles in Western Europe in 2015, representing a rise of 4.7 percent, while for whole Europe VW delivered 1,681,400 units, up 1,9 percent. In China, its largest single market, the company recorded a slight 0.3 percent rise in the month of December, but the annual sales dropped by 4,8 percent. The deliveries grew by 0.9 percent in North America in the full year. The decrease in the United States (-4.8 percent) contrasted with growth in Canada (+7.1 percent) and Mexico (+11.8 percent). The situation in the South America region remains tense, as 458,200 vehicles were handed over to customers there in 2015. The challenging situation in Brazil (-38.0 percent) continues to dominate developments in this region.
