The German based automaker Volkswagen is planning to develop its own versions of the Skoda Rapid / Seat Toledo which will be offered exclusively in China.
The new models which will enter Volkswagen’s lineup in China soon will be assembled by the company’s Chinese joint ventures Shanghai-Volkswagen and FAW-VW and while the first one will be named the Santana, the second one will be badged as a Jetta. The new Volkswagen budget sedans will be inspired by the Skoda Rapid and by the Seat Toledo and it will be sold only in China, where it will replace the Santana 3000 Vista and the Jetta MK2 vehicles.
According to the guys at autocar.co.uk, the two models mentioned above are underpinned by a modified version of the Polo’s PQ25 platform which should take on the unique road conditions in China. The basic Volkswagen Santana will be produced at a Shanghai-VW plant near Shanghai and it will get an 89BHP 1.4 liter and a 109BHP 1.6 liter petrol engines, along with a five-speed manual and a six-speed automatic transmission. The two models, which will be very similar to each other, will be revealed later on this year at the Guangzhou Motor Show.
