The small German model Volkswagen Up! has been recently named the 2012 World Car of the Year during the 2012 New York Auto Show.
Selected from an initial list of 34 contenders, the 2012 Volkswagen Up! subcompact vehicle managed to win the prestigious award of World Car of the Year, beating its other finalists the Porsche 911 and the BMW 3-Series. Besides the World Car of the Year, three other awards were handed over to the Mercedes-Benz S250 CDI BlueEfficiency, which won the 2012 Green World Car of the Year, the Range Rover Evoque, with its 2012 World Car Design of the Year and even if it didn’t “steal” the Up!’s award, the Porsche 911 managed to win the 2012 World Performance Car of the Year.
As a small reminder, the three-door version of the Volkswagen Up! is offered for 10,600 euros, while the five-door version starts at 11,100 euros. The entry-level of the Volkswagen Up! will be offered, just like before, with the 1.0 liter three-cylinder petrol engine, which is developing a total output of 60 horsepower, but another version of the same unit, with 75 HP, will also become available. Besides the three-door and the five-door of the Up!, VW is also planning to develop an all-electric version, a GT, a full BlueMotion and some other interesting versions based on the small model. The VW Up! will go on sale this summer.
