The smallest model in Volkswagen’s lineup, the Up!, has been recently named Car of the Year, by What Car?, despite its cheap price tag.

According to the What Car? editor-in-chief, Chas Hallett, the Volkswagen Up! had some serious competition for the Car of the Year award, like the BMW 3-Series, the Porsche 911, the Ford Mondeo, the Hyundai i10 or the Fiat 500, standing out from the crowd in its segment and also in the security award, thanks to the City Emergency Braking System. What is mostly interesting about the award is that the Seat Mii and the Skoda Citigo, both of them based on the VW Up!, haven’t even been nominated for the Car of the Year.

“The Volkswagen Up! is the best car we’ve seen this year because it combines refinement, quality, space and economy. It sets new standards for the GBP10.000 price bracket. It feels at home in town and copes admirably on the motorway; it is the right car for the time”, said the What Car? editor-in-chief, Chas Hallett.
