Volkswagen USA posted its best September sales results since 1972, with a total of 36,339 units sold, accounting for a 34.4 percent increase over September 2011.
Year-to-date, VW sales are up 37.2 percent, with September 2012 also being the 25th consecutive month of year-on-year growth for VW in the U.S.
“Tracking over a 37 percent increase year-to-date is a strong proof point that our products are on more shopping lists and gaining acceptance in the market. As we enter the fourth quarter of the year, we expect to continue our pattern of outperforming the industry,” said Jonathan Browning, president and CEO Volkswagen Group of America.
Jetta sedan, including the sporty GLI model, remains the volume leader for Volkswagen with sales totaling 12,584 while Jetta SportWagen totaled 2,166. The Jetta turbo hybrid, which will go on sale this month, recently achieved a Land Speed Record at Bonneville, posting 185 mph, a record speed for hybrid vehicles.
VW’s Passat sedan and Tiguan compact SUV posted their best September sales ever, with 9,500 units and 2,202 units, respectively. The Beetle also enjoyed its best September since 2003, with 2,622 units sold, while Golf September sales are the highest since 2007 at 3,250 units. The Volkswagen Touareg sold 828 units, a 26.2 percent increase.
VW’s high-mileage, clean diesel TDI models accounted for 23.9 percent of sales in September.
