Volkswagen reported January-September sales in China up 18.3% to 2 million units.
The sales over the nine-month period included the two joint ventures in China (Shanghai Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen), the Audi and Skoda sales, and also its Hong Kong operations. Sales in China in this period included 59,500 imported VW vehicles, an increase of 36% compared with the same period last year. The best-sold models were the Scirocco, the Passat Variant and the Touareg.
From January to September Audi managed to sell 297,100 vehicles in China, up 31%, with the A6L being its best-sold model with 96,100 deliveries. Skoda sold 181,900 units, an increase of 6.8% compared with the same period last year.
For Volkswagen the Chinese market is quickly becoming the most important buyer of its luxury Bentleys and Porsches. Last year sales of VW’s subsidiary Lamborghini surpassed the US sales, a clear sign that the new wealth in China make the luxury brands sell very well in the market.
Lamborghini’s sales are expected to reach those from last year, 400 units, while Bentley’s sales in China will surpass those in the US with about 2,300 units, up from last year’s 1,779 units. The fastest growth in the first eight months of the year in China was reached by Volkswagen with 1.7 million vehicles sold.
