Volvo has released some new details on the SPA, which will underpin the future generation of the popular XC90 SUV.
According to the Swedish based automaker, the SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) is made from mild steel, from extra high steel, ultra high steel, high strength steel and very high strength steel, so the word you should remember in this case is: you got it, “steel”. The new platform, signed by Volvo, will also receive an electrical architecture, which can accommodate some camera technology, sensor and microprocessor.
“Allowing the car to act automatically is crucial when moving towards the vision that future cars will not crash at all. The technologies enabled by our new Scalable Product Architecture will bring us significantly closer to this ultimate goal”, said Jan Ivarsson, the Volvo senior manager of Safety Strategy and Requirements.
The new generation of the Volvo XC90 will receive technologies which will be able to detect pedestrians or large animals at night. If the driver will not notice them, the vehicle will automatically brake itself to either prevent or reduce the crash damages. The model will also receive the Adaptive Cruise Control with Steer Assist. More details on the 2015 Volvo XC90 are limited for the moment.
