The Swedish brand has recently acquired Polestar to make it the in-house tuner – in line with AMG or M GMBH – and the first results include the Polestar Performance Optimization for the S90 and V90.
The program has been devised to allow owners to harness even more power from the D5 diesel engine fitted inside the all new S90 sedan and V90 wagon. Unlike the total conversion work done on the S60 and V60 polestar, this time around we’re treated to a milder “aftermarket” kit that focuses on drivetrain upgrades, enabling Volvo to deliver an affordable tuning package. The Polestar Performance Optimization will make the D5 2.0-liter biturbo diesel four-cylinder surge from the stock 235 hp and 354 lb-ft to 240 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. This seems like a very modest increase, but Volvo contends the updates will also enhance drivability in the middle of the rev range. The package can be installed by dealers and the improvements also enable better throttle response, faster shifts of the automatic transmission, while the gearbox also allows longer gear holding during acceleration.
The modifications bring a small improvement in terms of performance as well: the S90 reaches 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.9 seconds and the V90 in a flat seven, which is in both cases a tenth of a second better than in standard guise. The Polestar Performance Optimization will be available for customers in Europe, Asia, and Africa. And Polestar is also tipping a similar pack for the T5 gasoline 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder, available from October.
